Pagani Zonda C12 (1999)

The legend of Pagani Automobili begins with the Zonda C12, the very first model to roll out of the Modena factory. The C12 name comes from Horacio's wife, Cristina, and the number of cylinders, 12.

The first prototype was finished in 1998, and Horacio decided to introduce it to the public in the 1999 Geneva Motor show (Switzerland). This decision wasn't circumstantial, Horacio realized that if he wanted to stand out among established names like Ferrari, Lamborghini or Aston Martin, he had to make a direct impression on his public, and Geneva is the key date every year in the motor industry.

This tradition of introducing every new Pagani model in Geneva is still maintained to this day.

Horacio inspired himself in the Sauber Mercedes C9 that dominated the 1988 C Group season when it came to drawing the Zonda.
The result was a very slender silhouette, with a very short and pointy front end, which produces a very advanced cabin and an elongated rear end.

Only three units of the first Zonda were ever sold to the public until 2000.

Another two units were produced, one of them was used for the crash test needed to homologate the car, and the other one is kindly known as the Zonda "La Nonna" (Italian for grand mother). This unit has served as a test bed platform over the years to test every new piece and innovation of the subsequent platforms like the F, the Cinque or the 760, and nowadays it's driven over a million kilometers (~600.000 miles).
